Microdiscectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to remove a portion of a herniated disc that is pressing on a nerve root in the spine.
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes about 1-2 hours.
The surgeon makes a small incision in the back, usually over the affected disc. A microscope or loupes (magnifying glasses) are used to visualize the area and remove the herniated disc material. The surgeon may also remove a small portion of the bone or ligament that is pressing on the nerve.
